DBT-C is an intensive, research-based outpatient program designed specifically for children ages 6–11. This evidence-based approach helps children better understand their emotions, improve their behavior, and develop healthy coping and problem-solving skills that they can use in everyday life.
At its core, DBT-C is not just about helping children—it’s about empowering families. Parent involvement is essential to the success of the program, and we work closely with caregivers to ensure long-term support and success at home.
What Does DBT-C Include?
- Parent Training (Pre-Treatment Phase)
Before children begin individual sessions, parents participate in 6–10 weeks of focused training. During this phase, parents learn the same skills their children will be practicing, allowing them to become confident coaches and consistent supporters within the home environment. - Weekly Skills Training (6–10 Weeks)
Children meet with a trained provider to learn and practice four essential skill sets in a fun, supportive way:- Mindfulness: Noticing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors without judgment
- Distress Tolerance: Managing big emotions and tough situations calmly
- Emotion Regulation: Understanding, naming, and shifting emotions
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: Building healthy relationships and communication skills
- Weekly Family Therapy Sessions
Families meet together with the therapist to apply skills, address challenges, and work as a team to support growth and positive change.
Why DBT-C at LDR?
Children in this age group are still developing their ability to manage emotions and behavior—and when they face difficulties, it can impact the whole family. DBT-C offers structured, compassionate support to build emotional resilience, healthy relationships, and a stronger family dynamic.
